Peter GROAT, the son of Henrich Groat (5) and Maria Catharina Dederich, was born February 21, 1753. Records handed down to Peter's great-grandson, Benjamin F. Groat, state: "Peter Groat, born 1749, died October 18, 1843, in his ninety-fourth year. However, Peter stated in his affidavit for Revolutionary War service pension that he was born in 1753. Further, a christening record was recently discovered that indicates a Peter Groat (son of Henrich "Krad" and Catharina) was born February 21, 1753, and christened March 24, 1753, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Schoharie, NY. Witnesses at the christening were "Jacob Philip and Barbara Krad (8)" He is mentioned in the 1780 will of his father. He married Maria Cornicker (Kernicken) around 1780. She died in June, 1828. He was a private in the Revolution, serving in the Eighth Regiment, Albany County Militia, under Colonel, later General, Robert Van Rensselaer. Three members of the Daughters of the American Revolution [Georgia Hatcher Stockton Hatcher (443), Harriet Bertha Foresman (444), and Anna Elizabeth Groat Johnson (365)] base their membership on Peter's Revolutionary War service.
A portion of his affidavit for pension for Revolutionary War service, dated December 3, 1832, reads: "When called into service, this applicant lived in Columbia County, then Albany County, Town of Claverack, where he has resided all of his lifetime, except about three years, which time he lived in the adjoining town of Chatham, where he now resides." In a letter to Massachusetts Senator David I. Walsh, dated April 30, 1935, the Comptroller General of the United States reported that: "On September 13, 1843, the pensioner certified that he had resided in Ghent, New York, for six years and prior thereto, he resided in Chatham, New York." The report said that the last pension payment was made to the pensioner in Albany, New York, on September 15, 1843. The matter is further confused by a record of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Chatham listing the death of a "Peter Groat, a soldier of the Revolution, December 30, 1835, age 82." This description matches perfectly that of Peter of Ghent (born February 2, 1753 - died December 30, 1835 - age 82).
The part of Ghent where the Groat homestead was located was a Peter and Maria had eight children and we shall see that his descendants left their marks in history. Two sons founded towns named, initially, "Groat's Corners;" one son and a grandson rose through political ranks to become representatives to the New York State Assembly; two grandson's were 49'ers, sailing around Cape Horn to California in search of Gold!"; and one grand-daughter was a martyr to the Union cause during the Civil War.
