David GROAT, the son of Johannes Diederick Groat (69) and Phebe Langhton, was born January 1, 1801, and christened April 19, 1801. This is probably the same David shown in the 1855 census, aged 55, and living on the Van Deusen Farm. He probably married his wife, Sarah (last name unknown), around 1830. Sarah is buried at the Niver Cemetery in Craryville, having died April 13, 1852. They had two children:
Sarah: Born November 17, 1833.
- Freelin: Born January 21, 1837.
John GROAT, the son of Johannes Diederick Groat (69) and Phebe Langhton, was born April 3, 1802, and christened October 10, 1802, at the Reformed Church of West Copake. This appears to be the John Groat who married Sara (last name unknown) and had at least one son, probably three. He died November 29, 1849, and is buried with his wife, children, and grandchildren, in the churchyard at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Copake, Columbia County, New York.

He is listed in the 1850 Federal Census as living in Copake, Columbia County, New York, age 35, with his wife Adaline, age 36. The 1855 state census of Claverack lists him as a farmer "42", his wife "40"; sons Lester "8", Charles "6", and Alfred "2"; and "nephew" Freelin "18" They had 6 children - the older three died during a four month period in 1943, probably due to an epidemic:

Nicholas GROAT, the son of Philip Groat (76), was born around 1803. The will of Nicholas Groat (12) indicates that Philip had at least one son named Nicholas. This appears to be the Nicholas Groat who enlisted in the Northern Army during the Civil War on the 19th of October, 1861, at the age of 58! He seems to have been able to fool some of the Army's staff as his company commander, on his Certificate of Disability for discharge, stated that he was "forty four years of age" A month later, the post commander certified that he was fifty-eight. It is his request for a pension, filed in Algonac, Michigan, that proves his survivability. In this document, dated August 26, 1890, he is listed as 86 and the cause of disability as "a dose of poisoning (supposed to have been administered by his third wife, seven years ago last June)." The "third" was written over a second" which had been crossed out. He was granted a pension and lived yet another six and a half years and died July 1, 1896, at the assumed age of 93+. We've yet to find out what happened to the third (second?) wife who administered the poisoning but feel certain that she didn't do as well as Nicholas.

Cyrus, a farmer, constituted the fourth generation of Groats to occupy the family farm in West Ghent, originally settled by his great-grandfather Hendrich (5), in 1750. He was appointed Superintendent of the Poor by the County Board of Supervisors in 1853. Cyrus died January 26, 1900. The following biography was found in the Biographical Review:
_____________________________ CYRUS GROAT
Hendrick Groat, the great-grandfather of Cyrus was a native of Holland [actually Germany], possessing the habits of thrift and frugality native to the people of that county. When a young man [actually an infant] he emigrated to the United States, and, coming directly to this part of New York, was one of the earliest pioneers of Columbia County. He took up a claim of land in Ghent, paying rent on it for several years, afterward buying it, the deeds, now about two hundred years old, being in the possession of his descendant above named. Peter Groat, son of Hendrick, was born in Ghent, and was there reared to agricultural pursuits, becoming an important factor in the farming community, spending his long and busy life of ninety-six years [actually 87] within its precincts. He married a Miss Pike [in error, Peter's wife was Maria Corniker - Kernichen], and to them were born a family of seven children [actually 12]. At the time of his death Peter Groat was a pensioner of the Revolutionary War.
William P. Groat, son of Peter, was a native of Ghent, and was reared on the parental homestead. He began his business career as a tiller of the soil, but afterward exercised his natural mechanical ability as a carpenter, working at that trade for a few years. He subsequently again turned his attention to agricultural pursuits, improving a fine homestead in Ghent, where he spent his last years, dying in 1861 [1862], at the age of seventy-seven years. He married Hannah, daughter of Philip and Sarah Shufelt, of Ghent. To them were born ten children; namely Louisa, Sarah A., Maria, Cyrus, Philip P. Robert, Catherine, John C., William A., and Elizabeth.
Cyrus, the fourth child and eldest son of Peter [William P.] and Hannah Groat, received his preliminary education in the public schools of Ghent, afterward attending the academy at Nassau, Rensselaer County. While at home, his services on the farm were in constant requisition; and he thus acquired early in life a practical knowledge of the art of agriculture. He remained a member of the paternal household until twenty-two years old, when he took unto himself a wife, and established a home of his own. Removing to North Ghent, he rented there a farm, which he cultivated for two years. He next rented a farm lying opposite the Martin Van Buren homestead, living there for four years. His first purchase of land consisted of sixty acres adjoining the Van Buren Farm. On this he erected good farm buildings, and carried on general farming successfully for six years. Returning thereafter to his birthplace, Mr. Groat purchased one-half of the old homestead and assumed its management, also working the other half for his father on shares, continuing this way for about four years, when he bought the other half of the farm, and has been busily engaged in its improvement. The wisdom and ability with which he conducts his farming operations are evident to the passer-by, his land being well laid out, furnished with substantial buildings, and equipped with all the modern conveniences for agricultural work.
The maiden name of the wife of Mr. Groat, whom he wedded in 1836 was Anna E. Pulver. She was born January 13, 1866, daughter of Peter W. and Mary (Tator) Pulver, the former being a native of Claverack, son of Wandell Pulver, and the latter a native of Ghent. No children came to brighten the home of Mr. and Mrs. Groat. Mr. Groat takes a warm interest in all that concerns the welfare of his town and county, is liberal in his support of schemes to forward public improvements, and is active in political life. During his residence in Kinderhook he served one term as Commissioner, and has also served in the same capacity in Ghent, and one term as Superintendent of the Poor. Twice during the war he was appointed to enroll the town of Ghent and served acceptably as Revenue Assessor and as Loan Commissioner, holding each office for six years. His honesty and integrity are unquestioned, his business ability everywhere respected, and his services are often in demand in settling estates, the largest of which he has had charge of being the Shufelt Estate in Chatham. In politics Mr. Groat is a strong Republican. Religiously, he and his estimable wife are members of the Lutheran Church of Ghent.

ROBERT F. GROAT Robert F. Groat was born in the town of Ghent, NY, August 6, 1819. The homestead where he was born has been in possession of the Groat family for four generations. The family came from Holland about 1720 [actually from Germany about 1710], Hendrick Groat being the ancestor of the subject of this notice and the first of the family to settle in Ghent. His son Peter was a participant in the Revolutionary War and received therefor a pension. He was succeeded by his son William, father of Robert F. Groat. Robert F. Groat was educated in the common and private schools, and until 1851 devoted his time to farming. In the year last mentioned he removed to Hudson and engaged in the wholesale and retail grocery trade, in which he continued until 1891, when he retired, with a reputation of a good business man, industrious, honest, frugal, and an exemplary citizen. In 1852 he was married to Sarah J., daughter of Jacob and Hannah (Harder) Foland, of Oneida, Madison County, NY. They had one daughter, Anna Elizabeth, wife of Dr. Henry Warner Johnson (the son of Rev. William M. Johnson, D.D.). David Benedict joined the 1849 California gold rush, sailing from Murray's Wharf, New York, aboard the Tarolinta, Captain Cave - Master, January 13, 1849, around Cape Horn to San Francisco. His wife and children remained behind and were living with his father at the time of the 1850 Federal census of Ghent. He died July 4, 1868.

The 1855 New York State census lists his occupation as "merchant" (age 37), his wife Augusta (age 33), his daughters -- Ellen (age 10) and Anna L. (age 7), and his son - William (age 1). William Thomas was a charter member of Morning Star Lodge Number 128, of the International Order of Odd Fellows, instituted at Chatham, September 23, 1844, and he served as its first treasurer. He sailed from New York, aboard the Loo Choo, Captain Cushman - Master, March 5, 1849, around Cape Horn to San Francisco. This grueling trip is described in a letter to his parents from San Francisco, October 27, 1849 - he wrote: "I arrived here on the 16th Sept. after a voyage of 195 days." Records of the Protestant Dutch Church of Chatham show that she married Major Josiah Hunt, October 10, 1843. Major Hunt, educated at Brown University, was a civil engineer who served as superintendent of the Connecticut-River Railway and chief engineer of the New Haven and New London Railroad and the Terre Haute and Alton Railroad. A Genealogv of the Hunt Family, compiled by T. B. Wyman, Jr., states that Maria Deborah died at Hannibal, Missouri, "a martyr to her country's cause, from a fever brought on by her exertions in procuring clothing and equipment for the suffering soldiers in Missouri. Other family records indicate the actual date of death may have been July 16 or 24, 1861. They had four daughters.
After the death of Maria Deborah, Major Hunt married Sarah Logan Feland of Woodland, Kentucky. Sarah Logan Feland was the sister of Ann Elizabeth Feland and the half-sister of Ann Garnett Ritter, both of whom who married Peter Benjamin Groat (263). Their mother, Sarah Haskins Logan, first married Thomas Feland and then, after he died, she married Wilson Ritter of Woodland, Kentucky.

On February 27, 1850, she married Barent Van Buren, the son of Barent Van Buren and Catharine Vosburgh, born August 25, 1811. This was Barent's second marriage - his first wife, Helen Maria Du Bois, died March 19, 1845. He lived first at Waldon, in Orange County, where he had four children by his first wife. Later he moved to Ghent and still later to Chatham, on the old Kline Kill Road where he had a large farm. Barent Van Buren was the 2nd cousin, once removed, of Martin Van Buren, the 8th President of the United States. Caroline and Barent had two children. He died December 17, 1854, and he is buried with his parents, his wives, and his son in the cemetery on Cemetery Road in Ghent. Caroline Matilda outlived him by 54 years and apparently remarried - she wrote a letter to her brother, Peter B. Groat (263), dated March 15, 1877, under the name Caroline Matilda "Pease." He is buried in Ghent with his parents. The discovery of Peter's grave caused this compiler considerable confusion. It is on the edge of the Barent Van Buren family plot, inscribed only "Peter Groat." It was some time before I realized that the child was actually "Peter Groat Van Buren."

Groat or Peter Groat after completing school, he worked in his father's blacksmith shop. On October 28, 1847, at the Church of First Universalist Society of Newark, he was married by the Reverend J. J. Austin, to Mary Ann Lovejoy, the daughter of Daniel Benjamin Lovejoy and Luerena Case, born June 8, 1826, in Columbia County, NY.
The Lovejoy family was one of the earliest to settle in Massachusetts with John Lovejoy (June 15, 1622 - November 7, 1700) landing first in Newbury in 1635, and settling in Andover around 1644. He is listed among the first 23 settlers in Andover. Clarence Earle Lovejoy has documented and published the Lovejoy family history, originating with Johannes Lovejoy, born about 1460, in the town of Little Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England).
In 1861, R. P. was appointed Keeper of the Wayne County Alms House, a position that he held for nine years. He served as the an elected member of the New York State Assembly in the years 1889, 1890, and 1891. He then served as Postmaster of Newark until December 31, 1906. His obituary, published on the cover of The Newark Union Gazette, Saturday morning, July 30, 1910, said of him:
_____________________________
He had a keen insight into human nature and, being given certain conditions, was able with his fine appreciation of human nature to foretell the needs, requirements and probable outcome of almost any political situation. It was because of this gift that he was able, regardless of bitter opposition occasioned by political jealousies, to maintain his position as a leader and make other men kneel to his views.

Another, published in The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, Thursday, July 28 (or August 5), 1910, said:
_____________________________
He was a quiet man, but of much executive ability, a skilled organizer, and a recognized leader in the Republican Party of Wayne County. Mr. Groat, through his long life always held the esteem of his friends, compelled the respect of his political enemies, and was honored with many positions of public trust and confidence. Few men, if any, ever had the political power in Wayne County that was controlled by "Peter” Groat, and none used it more judiciously.
